  • Render Speed Question

So I should be able to post in the regular subtopics but cant for some reason...

So I have 3DS Max 2019 with VRay Next with 3 extra render nodes...
My workstation is a slightly overclocked i7 runs about 3.8 gHz with 10 true cores windows 8.1 64 g ddr4 ram.

My Render nodes are 3x older dual Xeon HP z800 workstations that run 6 true cores x 2 (dual processor), windows 10, with 64 g ddr3 ram...hyperthreading enabled runs at about 3.3 ghz- so 12 true cores

So I would expect that the workstation and the node would render at close to the same speeds...

But both with my scenes and with the vraybenchmark app... the workstation i7 renders about twice as fast as the dual xeon render nodes... The benchmark app sees all of the cores as it should but the speed difference doesn't add up to me...

Any thoughts.... and why cant I post in the regular subtopics

    Hello,

First of all about the forum posting rights - you should send an email to our support about that and they can sort your access rights.

From what I could find on HP site the z800 workstation uses quite old Xeons - for example the top one X5690 is from the beginning of 2011. On the other hand - I assume your i7 is quite new (10 cores) and overclocked... So I'd say it is normal that the new one is faster.

    Best regards,

Thank you..I have sent the admin a note... and. yes I suspect some specific issue with increased instruction set of newer chips and some other such things that I really don't know about is the issue, although I am hoping there is something I have set wrong or need to fix on these.... but I need to add in more render nodes and I'm just trying to figure out the most cost effective options.. I had thought that for $800 - dual xeon 8 core workstations at 3.3 ghz with 64 ram was a good deal, but if they are running at half the speed for those specs relative to new processors, then it really isn't so cheap.

I doubt that you've set something wrong - it's just that those Xeons are many generations behind the current ones. Every generation adds a few percent (~5-10%) on top of the previous so 5-6 generations difference is a lot.

You could check the benchmark page https://benchmark.chaosgroup.com for some hints about the performance of different CPUs..
