  • Phoenix FD w/ Octane

Can someone please explain how to get Octane to render Phoenix FD sims? I recently purchase both and was told by the reseller that I HAD to have a license of VRay to render them. Perhaps she meant to render it in the PFD's native format, cause I recall seeing Redshift render the volumes (but it required the sim to be exported in OpenVDB).

I google-searched to see if Octane was able to render PFD, and only got some brief mention that Octane could render PFD but not native FumeFX. It's hard to get any sort of clarification and any sort of guideline to using them together. I downloaded the PhoenixFD w/Scanline build as I don't have a VRay license on 3ds Max. Scanline does render it just fine, but I could not get Octane to render it (haven't tried the OpenVDB option yet), so I thought I would ask if it's compatible, first. If not, the next question is what channels do I need to export with VDB? Thanks in advance.

Oh, you definitely don't need a V-Ray license - the scanline build you installed is the one you need.

cb LLC uses Octane with Phoenix and might have more info on what versions you should use and what restrictions are there.

    Cheers!

Hi yes you can render phoenix liquids and fire/smoke with octane. I think fumefx is not supported. All you have to do is add octane volume modifier (with octane volume texture added to it) for fire or octane particles modifiers for foam and splash. Also in octane properties enable all three boxes for motion blur and in phoenix output velocity must be on. i attached a simple octane scene with modifiers added

Thanks. I discovered the first part (volume modifier) last night. I'm very glad it's supported natively and the work-around of exporting to VDB, isn't necessary. It's good to know about the other elements, as well. Would be nice to see a basic overview of PFD w/Octane, on Youtube or Vimeo. I searched and searched but couldn't find anything. One reason I went with PFD rather than FumeFX, was that I read somewhere on the Otoy forum that it was well supported by Octane, and FumeFX wasn't (FFX requires the volumes to be exported to VDB and re-imported).

The person who posted that just didn't mention how. Once I get a little experience with the two, under my belt, perhaps I will record something if no one else does.

Can you save it down to max 2016, would be interested in seeing how it works. As my current client has an octane workflow.
            Thank

Glad it worked. One problem octane still cannot support different color liquids (including mixing ) and different color smoke/fire in one grid. I hope one day they will support RGB support
