whenever i render my HDR image does not show up in the finished rendering, it is in the Preview image on screen though

If you save the image either as .jpg or .bmp, the HDR background will be saved (see attachment)
If you save it as a .png, you will need to do what chadstevens had already told you but in GIMP:
1. Right click the layer in the layers dialog.
2. Select Add Layer Mask from the context menu.
3. Initialize Layer mask to: Transfer layer's alpha channel.
4. Click Add
5. Go back to the layer's dialog. You will see a small preview of the mask next to the original layer. Right click the layer mask and select: Delete layer mask. This will discard all alpha information and will show up the background.Ana Lyubenova
