  • Phoenix FD with TP destruction

Hi i'm still pretty new to Phoenix FD, I have large scale destruction that I made with TP that has debris flying every where. Im going to put a gasoline type of explosion in the center but I also want some smoke fire trails on the pieces. Whats the best workflow when using Phoenix FD with TP for something like this? I've done these kind of effects with FumeFX but i'm seeing if i can get similar results using Phoenix FD .

    Hey,

You gotta add the pieces into a Phoenix Source and this should be it. Depending on the kind of emission you need, you can switch between Brush, Inject or Surface force modes of the Source.

In case the geometries do not emit, we're making some changes in the nightly builds that would allow it, so ping us and we'll update you when you can grab a latest nightly.

    Cheers!

Usually with fumefx i would attach particles to inside faces of the fragments that emit particle trails. Then use those particles as a fuel source. Still getting use to the workflow of Phoenix FD. I'll test out the Brush, Inject and surface force modes and see how it goes. Thanks Svetlin

Ah, yes, please also check the Polygon ID option of the Source - in Surface Force mode it would allow the source to emit only from certain poly IDs of the geometry, but you have to prepare the desired walls beforehand.

Okay great!. Can i use xmesh objects, or alembic as source, or does it need to be regular geo?

Both should work, but please ping us if there are any issues

I tested and it seems to emit fine from xmesh or alembic. THey have material ID's the fragments but not object IDs. But maybe its not so important since they just need to be like fireballs with smoke trails. I tried by starting off with the gasoline explosion preset but im having a hard time getting little fireballs with trails on the fragments. Can i combine two fluid containers. One for the gasoline type explosion and one for fireball trails? Just trying to get something that looks kind of like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1iJX7tycYw. I also noticed that the gasoline explosion preset defaults the scene scale to 17. Is that correct? since in the userguide it says that 1 is for realscale. Everything in my scene is in real scale. I have all the fragments as one object. Should i export them as separate objects. Is that why i dont get trails?

                Hello,

There should be no problem creating two grids - by default they will interact with each other correctly so it should work out of the box.
The scene scale of the gasoline explosion scales according to your scene scale in order to get a decent result. Feel free to change the scene scale if you think it doesn't fit the look you are after. Overall the preset it's just a starting point, that should be tweaked accordingly.
The other thing is that in the gasoline explosion preset the PHX Source emits for only 1 frame.
The trails should emit for a few frames so you can see them. You can make another source just for the trails and use the original one for the base explosion.

Destruction of parts only in FumeFX can you do?
can I do something with the help of a phoenix or just 3d max to do the destruction of particles?

                    Hey,

You can't do destruction in FumeFX.

I already answered your other thread where MassFX was used, and you could also use Thinking Particles/Volume Breaker or RayFire.

                    Cheers!
