  • 3DS Max Material Library vs Sketchup

Brand new to V-Ray for 3DS Max but have used V-Ray for Sketchup for years. Was just wondering if there is a 3DS Max material library out of the gate similar to Sketchup. In Sketchup, fresh off the V-Ray install you have a whole bunch of built in V-Ray materials like fabrics, meshes, metals of various colors, plastics, bricks, ground cover, etc... that you could start painting with right off the bat. I realize 3DSMax is a whole other level of rendering, but does that exist in 3DSM? Or do you need to start by creating your own material or downloading a vismat from one of many places on the web.

    Thanks for the advice!

Had no idea you got all that with Sketchup version. How many materials are there? Maybe it is the Corona library that they are starting to convert?

It looks like there are roughly 550 preset materials included in the install. Categories are:
Bricks, Carpaint, Ceramic & Porcelain, Concrete, Diagrammatic, Emmisive, Fabric, Foam, Glass, Ground, Leather, Liquid, Metal, Paper, Plastic, Stone, Tiles, Various, Wallpaint & Wallpaper, Wood & Laminate.

It's nice because you can get pretty darn far on a rendering simply by applying the presets and combining that with tweaking some basic diffuse or reflection settings. I just assumed that was a V-Ray across the board thing and not particular to Sketchup. As I'm just beginning to learn 3DS Max, I thought "let's hop in and start painting some stuff and see how it looks", but couldn't find the 3DS Max equivalent.

It seems like there is very little cooperation between the teams of different versions of Vray. A material library for 3ds Max has been mentioned by Chaos several times over the years, I think it was related to the VRmat library, but we haven't seen the fruits of it yet.

If you have poliigon subscribtion, you can use maxscript from poliigon.com which can convert textures(Diffuse, roughness, bump, displacement) to Vraymtl in batch.
