Doing an export to the renderer has one other big unmentioned advantage. At that point all you need is an importer to bring it back into whatever other app you want.

he means that if someone writes an importer, then the vray scene format becomes a cross platform format like 3ds, fbx, obj and so on...

Don't believe, that cebas can do it's job without huge bunch of bugs! The most needed thing with integration is full support of paintFX, fluids and maya's shading model itself. Coz "sphere in a box render" with plain GI is useless
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Hehe, I don't know man, those eyes to the left look like they mean business :P

Know what's funny is that I used to think you may be an MIA user Elzerion a while back. No joke.

The thing with supporting features as paintFX etc is a problem for everyone that makes a plugin for Maya. Those features is something that Alias for some reason doesen't want anybody to get intouch with. That's why Maya added the Convert paintFX To Polygon feature. So you actually can render "paintFX" The other features you mentioned still remains an issue. But I don't understand why that would be the most "needed" thing. Is the plugins otherwise useless?

I for one likes the new "trend" that more and more renders are released on other platforms than 3dsMax.

I tried to use maya. Really Since 1.0 version. As long as I remember - it was always a pain to render correctly paintfx etc. with mental ray. Until it started to get rid of virtual paintfx hair/fur/grass/etc. by converting it to polygons (maya 6.x) and new shaders. Well can't say right now what is the most and what is the least important in upcoming fR or VR for maya. Must say the only thing - I need 'em to render all the things maya can handle!

Turtle is getting close to that And I want damn good logging system to know everything render is doing at any time! It's a pain to look at the standart MR logs.

I was a beta tester for Turtle before it got release and it lacked quite much features at that time but I haven't tried it out since they actually released it.

Maybe I have to check it out again.

Hehe...I actually think I remember that guy. He was a Brazil user too wasn't he? Seem to recall him writing insanely long posts explaining the inner workings of renderers to new render-cadettes.
