  • Unscientific render engine comparisons....Vray wins!

Interesting video on render engine comparisons. Id have loved for them to test the CPU renders on a threadripper system, but I think the results are still somewhat valid.

Thanks for completely spoiling my morning's fun!
It's funny, you can actually see it was Vray from the 'blurred' first slide he showed, so actually no surprise
Great video, thanks for the link

A 64core Threadripper is about 5x as fast as the i7 used in this test so the math is easy. With that in mind it looks like top CPU still beats top GPU, of course this is very scene dependent.

Interestingly, one of the V-Ray images is full of bucket artifacts:

I think that was using the old caustics setup compared to the Corona system. The Vray progressive caustic mode should get results similar to Corona. I’ve tested caustics in both engine and while the “no setup” is nice, caustics are still barely usable in complex scenes with many light, on simple scenes are very nice and fast though. Probably a custom manual setup in Vray is still the only option for complex situations.

Comparing render engines is always tricky; of course I'm glad that Corona and V-Ray seem to perform well in these tests, but there is still so much stuff we can be doing better/faster...

            Best regards,

I'm not surprised much honestly seeing Vray at the top in both CPU and GPU tests, Probs to Vray's exceptional smart sampling (and Optix optimaztions on GPU)
And if they are using defaults, it means 100 bounces in Vray's case hence the result is much brighter, then with ACES defaults I think Vray's result would look great!

It was interesting to see how dark the results from Arnold looked in the school room and the archvis scene.

Good, old adaptive HDRI artifacts? xD

It looks like it; but then again we added progressive caustics in a later build than the one that was tested. Still, it would definitely be good to test caustics+adaptive dome light more carefully.

In terms of an artistic look I do like the GI clamping look. Is the equivalent in vray the primary/secondary GI multipliers in the GI tab?

Wow, awesome results! I feel this test was fairly set up, better than the average render engine comparrison you normally find on YouTube. So it's great to see V-Ray in comparison with it's competitors! Good job!
