  • some vray questions... and my scene for comments

    Hey all,

I have some quastions, hope you can help me out.
let me first say im not a noob in vray and i'v saw all the gnomon vray tutorials and some more.

    1. Is the Irridance map dependant on the image resolution? (meaning IR map will look diffarent on 640x480 then 800x600)

    2. Do I need to remake the IR map everytime i change something with the lights?

    3. Are the color mapping settings saved in the IR map? or can be changed after?

    4. If I have some animatiable lights and some not animatiable, how meny Nth frame is it recommended to do the IR map incramental? and should i bake the non animatiable lights into the IR?

    5. Is it recommended to do the animation in small parts with only the relivant IR map so it wont be huge (like i have now around 30 MB) and will take up longer to load at each frame start?

    6. Is it recommended to do the IR map with all the glass in the scene hidden?

    7. Is it ok to use DR to make multiple frame incramental IR map?

    8. Is there a way to make an attunation of the reflaction or something similar?

any comments or links to other posts or tutorials will be more then welcome.

hope you can help me out with these questions.

    Thank you very much

    1) yes its res dependant

    2) yes you need to do a new map each time. GI is a calculation of light. you change anything with lights or objects and the lighting solution becomes different.

    3) im not entirely sure. i think its not but someone else can answer better

    4) as i said in 2 your going to need a new map each time a light changes so you cant use incremental add with anything besides the camera animating.

    5) what you propose sounds correct to me, if you save a new map every 100 frames for instance your irradiance map will be smaller and thus load faster. but you might need a couple frames overlapping to so a quick fade just so you dont get any jumps betwen 1 set and another.

    6) i wouldnt recommend it because any reflections in the glass of areas that a light solution wasnt calculated for would show the uncalculated area.

    7) currently you cant use DR for multiframe incremental but with the copy some of us are testing you can and as you will have seen on the forum by those of us who have tested it the new DR is extreamly stable.

not entirely sure what you mean

First of all let me say thank you very much =O)

      you've been helpfull

the thing is i have an animation with moving camera and moving lights.
i know that rendering it in low quality (low samples) will get me "sample swimming", do you have any recommendations for settings i should use?

also it would be great to get some comments on what i have so far:
      what i had was this:

after i tweaked it i ended up with this:

      what do you think?
also im thinking about overlaying some volume light to the moving lights.
any recommendations of something fast (plugin) or the max default is fastest?

about the attenuation of the reflection, im looking to do something like this with the Vray reflections:

      with attunation

      without

is there any way to do that in vray?

      thats it.
      thanks again

you mean falloff? what version are you using? actually i think you should send an email to chaos group to get full forum access and have this post moved to another section so that you can get the proper help you need.

in max scanline render it was attunation in the raytrace, i didnt get the same effect with falloff and vray

btw what do you think about the images?
the first one is med settings in the IR map and 2nd is low
due to time restrictions i cant use the best quality i want
