Sorry to drag this back up, but it's still giving me various headaches.

I've decided to switch the 3DS max colour management settings to "No Conversion" for the render output defaults. Though the viewports still seem to perform some kind of conversion when loading jpegs as backgrounds.

In VRay I've switched to "Un-tone-mapped" and "save in image" which gives me the output I want HOWEVER it doesn't save this in the scene(!).

I've just spent most of the day rendering images out not realising that VRay defaults back to "ACES 1.0 SDR-Video" every time you restart max. Utterly infuriating.

Maybe max doesn't have permissions to write to the ini file that defines this property?

Those conversions are for the output, and the conversion is surely caused by the chosen Color Space. I just noticed that VRayBitmaps' RGB Primaries option doesn't affect the viewport background (only render) - I'll log this for improvement so that one can preview them with a retained look.

So it seems. I'll make a note about that, too. For now, if needed, you can set an environment variable for the View Transform with VRAY_VFB_OCIO_VIEW_TRANSFORM.

EDIT: Logged both issues (internal tracker id: VMAX-14759 and VFB-147).
