Was there a demo you could use before deciding to buy Onyx Treestorm? Or was it a 100% risk venture? Because if there IS a demo on their site, I must be mentaly retarded and cant find it.
Ok then, Im guessing Onyx Tree-Storm is STILL probably the best tree option then? Because I just got a look at the NatFX trees... $69 per tree, that just doesnt seem worth the cost. It looks like you can at least make your OWN using TreeStorm and The classic modeler, and also take appart the free trees online, which are already well modled.
you 'can' make your own trees, but it's a bit of a learning curve. the program was written by people who really really know plants inside out - so the language could be more user friendly.
however, it is easy to adjust/reduce the poly count of trees tho. and the advantage of the treestorm plugin is wind which is easy to use and very fun (mainly on the palms).
tree species per dollar it's value for money i find.
it's great for trees that don't have to be close up, close-ups don't look very realistic. But then again, I'm not sure of any tree program that would look good close up.

The realistic ones seem to look great for stills, then when you start animating you realise its Camera-facing flat planes =P And the whole "realsim" illusion is lost.
Also, when you get Tree Storm, can you install it on mulitple machines for net rendering much like max and Vray? You can use it on multiple machines, you just cant modle with it on those render nodes using 1 lisence? or do you have to buy like 10 lisences for 10 individual machines just to net render with it?

About the modeling part of Tree Storm, does it " INCLUDE" Tree Classic? Or does it just plug Into Tree Classic? Because I dont even see Tree Classic on their site.
And yeah, my boss deffinately wants wind even though I dont realy ever notice the competition using wind in trees.
I E-mailed them requesting a demo, They sent me a working copy that doesn't save, and a model to import into Max.
I don't know why they don't dispurse this demo on their website, but drop them an E-mail and they should help you out.

when i got it i bought the four tree components and the treestorm plugin came free - it was a special i think. email direct with your questions, they're quite good to deal with.
As for the guy above who said they gave him a demo, they emailed me back saying that they dont have a demo.. (Thats about the point where they got axed from the list in my book/budget.)
but willing to reconsider for geometry based as opposed to opacity based
