  • Version 1 - resizing of 'Bump' maps? How?

    Hi

Many thanks for the new release of Version 1.

I know there has been much discussion on 'bump' mapping but:

Does the resizing of the 'Bitmap' bump maps in the material editor work?? - (because I can't seem to get it to!)

If so, how do I do it? - any help would be most appreciated!! (due to project deadlines!!!!!!! - or do I have to revert to 'Flamingo' "BOOOO!!, HISSSS")

If not, when is this feature likely to be incorporated? (as I would think it's rather critical??)

    Cheers

You would need to familiarize yourself with RCM. Select the object you wish to apply the bump map to. Then go to object properties (F3) and select "Mapping". Add a new mapping channel. Choose from the different styles of mapping, whichever makes sense to the object (Planar, Cylinder, Sphere, Surface UV, etc...) Then if you look toward the bottom there is stuff that lets you select the size of the mapping and rotation and all that kind of good stuff. That is the area you will want to mess around with. I don't think you can mess with the size if you have Surface UV, but the other mapping styles should let you mess with it.\

When you have your channel all set yo add the bump map and make sure the bitmap is using the proper Explicit Map Channel, channel 1 by default.

    [edit]
The "scale" in the UVW Transform works a bit more like an additional "repeat" operation. If you have a scale of 2 for u and 2 for v it will tile 2 times in both directions. 0.25 for u and 0.25 for v will make the map appear bigger. However, I would suggest using RCM for most of the heavy lifting when it comes to mapping

Version 1 - resizing of 'Bump' maps? How?

      Hi joeb

      Thanks for the reply

Are you saying that you have to create the 'map channel' FRIST before you add a 'bump map to the material editor?

Because I've been doing it the other way around - ie - Select the object then add a 'bump' in the material editor - then go to the RCM mapping area and add a 'map channel'.

My way doesn't seem to work? - could you (or someone else) try my way and let me know if it works??

Hmm, I have tested to tile the bump per RCM and per Vray texture control. Both methods are good working in RC1.

Is the problem mapping polysurfaces versus surfaces?

I'm trying to map polysurfaces - Is that not possible?

I've followed joeb's post to the letter (using RCM) and although I can see the 'mapping widget' change size and position the rendered image remains exactly as it was when first rendered??

Version 1 - resizing of 'Bump' maps? How?

... I have create a cube and set the RCM to spherical -> ok.
... I have set tiling to 9 and the spherical texture on the cube is tiled.

If somebody like, I could email the test scene.

All is well (many thanks to Micha) - it looks like my old version didn't completely uninstall??
Reloaded new RC1 and it now works!
Note for next time: Completely uninstall, check and check again then load new!!!!

Are you saying that the old version of v-ray has to be completely uninstalled before installing the new version?

Just answered my own question. I am up and running OK.

You don't have to, but there is much more control over everything if you do add an RCM map channel. The order in which you make the two doesn't matter. You can make a material, then add a map channel, or vice versa. So long as they are both in place before you hit render all should be well

Yes there are some issues with our installer right now. It seems that it doesn't uninstall the RCM and ASGvis materials correctly.
