I cannot get light to pass through glass -- ever. I always have to turn off glass while trying to render an interior scene... any suggestions?

In your Glass Materials Refraction Layer, make sure the "Affect Shadows" and "Affect Alpha" options are checked.

You should also enable caustics. Turn on indirect illumination in our options. Then you should see a new panel pop up toward the bottom of the options that says "Caustics". Turn them on. You need to make sure that your light source is emitting caustic photons. You can control this by selecting your light -> going to light properties -> And looking for the paramater "Caustic Subdivs". You can also enable "Refract Caustics" at the "Indirect Illumination" settings to have refractive GI caustics on.

      Edit:
Ok after re-reading your post I think I misunderstood the direction you were going. Caustics aren't the answer your looking for. bdcali hit the nail on the head

... glass for windows? No colored? Try to use a material with a refelction layer on a single surface only. The simpliest way.
