  • Saving Settings

hey guys. We were sitting around talking about Vray today, and we thought we'd add some more stuff to the current wish list. I am sure that some of these items have already been mentioned, but we only have access to limited parts of this forum. So here goes, sorry if this is old news stuff.

    1) we would like to be able to save the render engine settings to some form of file then be able to load that file. This will let us configure different settings that novice users won't want to mess with, and it will also save setup time.

    2) We would also like to see the option for materials to be automatically saved to .vismat file insted of needing to be exported to file. This will make creating libraries a bit quicker. Also, there should be a default directory in which vray (on start up) will load in all .vismat materials creating a default stock materials without doin any importing. I supose this could be done by modifying a template file for rhino, but we agree it would be easier if we could say on start up load all materials from C:\xxxx into the material editor.

    3) the paths to associated material texture files should be relative to the 3dm path or the .vismat path. as of now you have to reassign all texture files like C:\wood.jpg when you open an existing 3dm someone else has already made. for example.. micha's
    D:\Material\Environment\WaldplatzNebenKapelleBlur. hdr

anyway let me know what you guys think, or perhaps if some of this stuff is already present and we've overlooked it.

You can save the render settings currently as a .visopt file. In the Vray render Options window, click File / Save, viola.
Vray is bundled with a few of these .visopt files.

Those are good suggestions - the relative path item is something that would definately help when transporting scenes.

      Thanks for the ideas.

also a bunch import of material in one single step., and importing without doing something like:
material create, import, delete the newly created just for importing.

ahhh and there you have it. Would be nice to save the file as the Default when starting Vray.

You don't need to make a dummy material for importing - you can just right click on "Scene Materials" and import a material there.

Importing many materials at once would be very nice though

importing many materials at once is nice, but to define a material libray path that always imports is even better. as jewellers we tend to use many of the same materials over and over and over and over... well.. you get the idea

I see - so when a user starts a new file there is a directory that populates commonly used vismats immediately into the scene?

I would suggest to create a "load materials from directory" button. So, the user could create libraries at directories and load the full library at one mouse click. Or the import UI allow to select more than one material. So, the user could go to a library dir and load what he want - all or selected mats only.
