  • render onto a background image

    hi there:

i have not been using 3D MAX for ages. basically ever since vray for rhino was released. rendering directly inside the software you're modelling in is just such an improvement for the workflow.
anyway. now i'm finally looking for a function/feature i can't find in rhino:
    http://www.aversis.be/3dviz_portfolio/25.htm

    i want to render a product into a photo/onto a background image.
just like they often do with cars, but in my case i want to render a bottle and a glass into a kitchen photo.
i also have a chrome ball, so i will create a custom HDRI for the rendering.
the objects i want to render onto the photo are transparent, so photoshopping is not good enough.

in 3D MAX one can set a background image for the perspective/camera, that does not move, so you can align your objects in the scene to the image.
how do i do that with vray for rhino ? or is this something for the whishlist ?

    please help.

Re: render onto a background image

Well, doing things like compositing into complex reflection/refraction environments is by no means a one-click solution...even in Max. As far as how to get this done in Rhino, I would suggest using the BackgroundBitmap command. From there, you can align your scene to the image and set up the camera. After that, then place an image behind your objects that has the image that you're trying to comp into and is normal to the camera. To do this, set your construction plane to View (Cplane> View) and use the PictureFrame command to insert and size the image (it will actually be a plane though). Now make a V-Ray material that has the image in the Diffuse layer and has an alpha contribution of 0(you'll need the SR for this...Material>Options>Alpha Contribution). That will help you get better refractions, although you'll still need to set up you're environment too.

Also, if you have a refractive material, it would be a good idea to check the Affect Alpha option in the Refraction layer of the material

If you look at my gallery you will see, it's possible. At the rendertool collection thread you will find a camera mapping tool or you use the environment mapping of Vray - if I remember me right, I posted experiment at the forum some months befor.

An old wish is direct "camera mapping" support for VfR, this would make it complete easy.
