  • Some help needed with my settings

    Hi all,

I've been starting to use Vray for Rhino lately and I have been having some problems when using irradiance map as primary render engine.
When I try to render, it always gives me this ugly patch-pattern near my object, and some darker spots on my object.

I've been searching this forum to find an answer for solving this. I read that I had to raise the hemispheric subdivisions and also the amount of samples taken. I raised both as you can see, but I'm still experiencing this.

I also know that this is a problem that occurs when using HDRI maps, but even when I used a blurry map, these nasty patches keep coming.

Does someone know how to solve this?
I know rendering with a different engine like QMC will not have these spots, but the render times are obviously a lot longer.

The problem that keeps occuring when using irradiance maps (I stopped the render somewhere in the process, but you can see it clearly):

The settings that i am using with the irradiance map

    Thanks,

    Tom

We haven't use Quasi Monte-Carlo since version 1, a very old version. Why you are not using the latest version? The update is free. Your IRR setting are very high, thus that is not the issue. If you are using an HDRI, that could be the issue. If you use a sharp HDRI on the GI, may produce splotshiness. Try to use a blurry version of the HDRI in the GI (Skylight) and the sharp version for the Background or for the reflection.

Thanks, but I did use the a more blurry HDRI map already.

However, I have updated my version, so I will try and render it again soon

      Thanks!

Re: Some help needed with my settings

An easy way to tell if this is an HDRI effect is to remove the map from the GI Skylight and try a plain white color. If the blotches go away then it was the HDRI.

But I would consider the Irradiance Map settings. They're high, but not extreme. Start by doubling the Samples, then render. If it's still blotchy, double Hsph. Subdivs, then render. If still blotchy, go back to samples. Lather, rinse, repeat.
