  • I wonder!

i was wondering, who in here can really say they understand vray so well that they can explain it all and do anything in any situation? i wish i understood it all, i understand alot of things but i don't think i know more than 50% of what it can really do. so who here can really say they know all the parameters and can explain it? am now embarking on a journey and study of vray because i think i use it so often i should understand it meanwhile i do it and i can be able to say to someone else what this is is for and what that is and how they work with each other.

I know Fernando can answer pretty much any question. I think he also does training too, you can ask.

ok, my first question is this, why is the system parameters for sketchup different from those in 3ds max on default, as i read there is a matter of speed involved with these settings and render time

Thank you andybot. Yes we can do training if you need a better understanding of the V-Ray setting or you can find the explanation here: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/200R1/. The info is for 3DS Max and Maya, but the setting are also the same in V-Ray for Rhino and SU. One problem could be how apply what spot3d said into a render, but they also have some very good examples of the options.

One of the main reason was that we don't have dynamic geometry with the exception of displacement. So we didn't want to mess with the default setting that you guys knew from the previous version of V-Ray for SU. In the feature we are planing to include other dynamic geometries like Proxies. SO we are going to change all the V-Ray setting to be constant with the default setting of V-Ray for Max until it is possible. Also we want to adjust the setting to give you guys a good starting point. For example if you click render with the default setting in 3D Max you will get a black render. The stronger areas on Sketchup is Architectural, so we setup the our default setting to get a nice exterior render if you just click render in V-Ray for Sketchup. Then you just have to adjust some parameter to get your desire result.

hmmm, i know all the places for tutorials just that now that i understand some to a point its always good to know them in detail, am moving on to materials now, i notice in renders that the rigt materials makes a world of difference, more questions to come soon. i hope to one day be where you are fernando in terms of knowledge on this topic. maybe even come to work for chaos (just a dream for now) one day n am serious cuz i love this so much you have no idea.

Just a quick thumbs up - I think you all did a great job with the default settings for the current version. I can easily tweak it for interior, exterior, combination, etc. and serves me very well.

That was the idea when I made the default setting. I want to make a easy and neutral setting that can be tweak for any situation.

Thank you for your kind words. 5 years ago was a dream for me work for Chaos Group or McNeel (McNeel, because my main software is Rhino) and you can see now, I have almost 5 years working with Chaos Group USA (formerly ASGVIS). Who knows, your dream can come true.

well i am working towards it then, its already in my goals list. you guys are truely inspiring. one more question, "MAX DEPTH "in global switches. it increases the amount of reflection by duplicating the same reflection of an object reflected on or off another object? if so, why would we do this? isn't it correct to have only one of what is reflected to get a true reflection of an object's environment?

Basically the Max Depth control how many reflection and refraction you will have in the render. In the fallowing example I have two mirror one in front of the other. In the first image I'm using a value of 2 in Max Depth, notice that I have two reflection before V-Ray end with the exit color of the material. In the second image I have Max Depth = 5 and in the final image I have 30 in Max Depth. This option allows you to have more control over the reflection and refraction to speed up your render where you don't need too many reflection or refraction or have a more realistic reflection/refraction if you increase the Max Depth. You could also control the Max Depth per material.
I hope these can help you
