  • Vray grain is driving me insane

ok so i'm trying out Vray 2 RT for the very first time and i am getting a lot of noise or grain.

i have read lots of tutorials and searched through tons of forum threads on noise and what settings to tweak. none of that fixed my problem! i'm going crazy!

now after tweaking various things for about a full day i managed to reduce the grain by about half but it's still totally unacceptable for my project (i will be compositing live actors shot on a dslr camera in HD).

my model is a plastic toy castle. i have tried various materials (vray materials and standard materials, etc) and they all end up the same.

here is a picture of my render after tons of tweaking...

here is a picture of my set up (just one vray sun and a vray physical camera)...

    http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...scenesetup.jpg

and here are some of my settings in Vray...

    Adaptive DMC

    Antialiasing - Off

    Adaptive DMC image sampler:
    min subs 1
    max subs 16
    clr threshold 0.005

    GI on

    Primary: Irradiance:
    multiplier 1.0
    HSph subs 40
    Show calc. phase checked

    Secondary: Light Cache
    multiplier 0.85
    Subs 700
    Sample size 0.03
    Show calc. phase unchecked

    Environment

    GI Environment (skylight) override OFF

(when I turn this on it gets dark, have to use very high multiplier to balance it out, and the grain issue is no better)

    DMC Sampler
    adaptive amount: 0.85
    noise threshold: 0.01

    Color mapping

... set for linear workflow ala this tutorial http://www.jamesshaw.co.nz/blog/?p=155

    ----

please help, i'm going crazy. and keep in mind i'm really new to all this... so if you have any tips, please explain them in a way a beginner would understand. thank you.

Are you using the RT engine or the regular production renderer? Was not clear from your post. You mention "Vray 2 RT" but then you talk about the production renderer settings which have no effect whatsoever on the RT engine.

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

hey Vlado, thanks for the response.

well i have Vray RT set as my production renderer and material editor.

after setting Vray RT as my production renderer, there are only two tabs in the render set up box... Common, and Vray-RT... all the settings i quoted earlier are found in the rollouts of the Vray-RT tab.

RT is good for preview but not final render... use vray production render for rendering if u want smooth images...

            Happy to help.

Also set up all ur material/light sampling to minimum 32 samples. It will be smooth and render at that same speed as 8...
