  • ply2vrmesh with houdini bgeo?

Do the ply2vrmesh works with houdini 12 bgeo format?

I always have an error "Magic number not found".

    Any solution? Many thanks

No, it doesn't work with the Houdini 12 files yet. You will have to save to legacy bgeo.

With the latest nightly builds there's no need to rename...

Are there plans to update ply2vrmesh to work with bgeo format for newer versions of Houdini? We're using Maya 2015 with Vray 3.1 and getting the "Magic number not found" too.
The problem with using .bhclassic (Houdini 11 format) is that it does not allow for newer Houdini things like polysoup or VDB.

I think this was done ages ago in the nightly builds...

Thanks. Would that then be the nightly version of the ply2vrmesh tool then that we would need to update (rather than Vray itself)?

I guess any recent nightly will do.

While I'm at it, we are getting a 1kb files when converting .bgeo and .bhclassic files to .vrmesh with ply2vrmesh. Is this a known error?

Alembic via a proxy is of course one option. However, since Alembic uses a single file for a sequence, they can get quite large with a dynamics sim. That means slow load times over a network resulting in slow renders. Using a sequence of geo helps with that. So we want to have both options available.

Well, V-Ray can load sequences of Alembic files too...

Thanks, that's good to know. Would there be any advantage to converting an abc sequence to vrmesh before reading it in with VrayProxy as opposed to just reading the abc sequence directly to a proxy?

The .vrmesh files tend to be faster to process than Alembic files (and also sometimes smaller). But other than that, there is no difference for the moment.
