  • 0 licenses / Preparing renderer... Could not obtain a license (-98)

I'm upgrading from Rhino V4 and previous version of V-Ray to Rhino V5 with V-Ray 1.5. The operating system is Windows 7 Pro (64bit).

The dongle is recognized. V-Ray license service shows in the Taskbar.

Get status of the server indicates 0 licenses total, engaged or free.

"1. Open a web browser and in the address bar enter "http://someserver:30304/upgrade " where "someserver" is the name or IP address of the machine where the V-Ray licensing service is running (or localhost if you are on that machine). This will open the following web page:"

This step does not work. "The server at www.someserver.com is taking too long to respond." "The server at www.localhost.com is taking too long to respond."

When I try to render in V-Ray 1.5 for Rhino I get this message: "Preparing renderer... Could not obtain a license (-9"

I've never encountered such an overly/complicated installation. Can someone please help? Thank you.

OK, I've now resolved whatever issue getting to the upgrade page. (unplugged and replugged in the dongle then repeated the step)

I've emailed the context file to vray@chaosgroup.com. I'm not sure what any other relevant information might be.

How long should expect to wait to receive back a .rtu file? Why must this be so complicated and time consuming?

      Have you received your RTU-file?

Yes, thank you. I've got VFR 1.5 running.

Now I'm wondering why my rendering looks dramatically different/worse with V1.5 compared to when I render the exact same setup in V1.05.29!

I will show rendered images for side by side compassion here soon.

Can you post two images rendered with 1.5 and 1.05.29 just to see how different they are?

I've fixed a few issues with the materials in VFR 1.5 and I am rendering another version now. Instead of showing them here, can I send you image links in an email or PM when they're both ready? Thanks.

I'm realizing now that I'm comparing the results in Photoshop is that the version from 1.50 is a bit crisper or has more range. The background is however more grainy. I don't know what, if anything, I could do to reduce that considering speed and that I already have Max subdivs set to 100 in the Image Sampler and the Noise threshold set to .005.

I think what has mainly thrown me off track, based what I'm accustomed to with VFR 1.05, and is that in version 1.50 the rendering image in the Frame Buffer looks much more noisy or grainy. In other words the noise or grain in the 1.50 Frame Buffer looks quite exaggerated for some reason.

Viewing the rendering image at 100% of course provides the most accurate indication of the quality of the image; although I think even then the grain or noise is slightly exaggerated compared to the actual final saved image. Again this is all compared to what I'm accustomed to from VFR 1.05.

Here are screen captures viewed at 25, 50 and 100% in the 1.50 Frame Buffer:

I think it is possible to clear this noise with better sampling settings - is it possible to send us your scene? If it is confidential you can remove your main object and replace it with sphere for example, but do not remove the lighting and keep at least one of the materials.

                Thank you in advance.
