  • V-Ray render settings reset to default

I'm a demo user of V-Ray 2.30.01 for Max 2011 x64. Not running Max as administrator because then it can't access our mapped drives.

All the settings in the render setup keep resetting to default in the middle of working. I often have to try to capture my current settings so I can reload them, but sometimes can't do it in time... after changing 4-5 things, everything resets to default again.

For example, in the V-Ray tab I'll enable the VFB, and then assign some HDR maps in Environment. I then go to the Indirect Illumination tab. I then go back to V-Ray tab and the things I previously set will now be set to default, VFB is not enabled and the environment maps are cleared.

This seems to be random, I never know when the settings will "stick" and when they will reset.

This is especially troubling because we are evaluating V-Ray for use in our studio... but it is hard to get the "right" settings when, after tinkering for a while, everything gets set to default and my last saved preset is too old.

Please advise on what we can do to fix this.

Turn off the 3ds Max auto-save and it will be fine.

Thank you! I'll try that now.

Is this something that the group should look into fixing? I imagine a lot of people want to have auto backups, but want to preserve their V-Ray settings.

There is nothing to fix; this is an intentional limitation of the demo version (it resets the render settings on every file save). The full version doesn't do that, of course.

Oh, I see... well I tried to find a list of the limitations in the demo version and couldn't find them. It should definitely be made more apparent on the site, I was tearing my hair out trying to figure this out! =P

It might be helpful to request a full evaluation - you can send us an email to vray@chaosgroup.com for more info.
