  • Realistic static clouds in Phoenix

    Hi,

I'm trying to simulate a static cloud in the Phoenixfd 2.2 trial version for a personal project and this is the workflow I am using..

    1. Generating geometry to use as particle source

    2. Using a Pf source event with position object set to volume. and no speed emission.

    3. Using the Pf source as the fluid source.

    4. Using multi pass advection/ vorticity = 1, randomise = 2, inject fluid and use particle size.

I need some advice on making a larger scene with many cloud formations because I'm trying to do a dogfight

Has anyone successfully made a good looking cloud system before in Phoenix? If so, please help if this works out I will buy a license.

    Thanks.

just simulate few clouds and render them multiple times with rotated/translated simulators.
btw, in the old versions we had a sample scene that produces clouds. it was low res simulator that uses displacement during the renderig.
now having more experience i would say this approach was not the best one, it's better to use high res simulator and no displacement.
anyway, the cloud forming was different, it's not based on geometry shape, the "steam" is released from a mapped plane and fixed frame (17) is rendered. to reproduce the condensation effect all the steam below given height is removed in the render setup, using gradient texture as opacity multiplier.
in the attachment you will find the reworked scene, that uses no displacement and the mapping of the opacity is replaced by gizmo, that is easier to control.

I can't access the attachment. It says I don't have sufficient permissions. Could you please mail it to me at prat391@gmail.com if and when you have the time. I need to see it because I didn't understand quite a bit about this new technique.

      Thanks Ivaylo!

        ok, you have it
are you with demo version? if not, ask the support for forum access

Thank you Very interesting technique! Shame i can't go high res with this, then i would really see its potential.

Do go through this link when you get the time. It explains the technique they used in the A-Team movie airplane fight scene. This is the method i was trying to use. In the Autodesk Vision seminar this year Marcus Nordenstam(co-developer of Naiad) also talked about the future of geometric FX.
