  • Vray & Shave Rendering Problems

    Hi guys,

I am running maya 2103 with vray 2.4 & shave_haircut plugin v8, I am trying to render full fur cartoon chr in production ,there is not much of doc from shave & haircut as far as optimising render times in vray.I wonder if someone from vray team can help me out with this problem.

we are facing problems with render time & flicker issues and we are not using any kind of GI ,but we are trying to render animated chr for a show ,Online forums suggest using raytracing with fur is a nightmare from rendering & flicker perspective ,is there any way i can Optimise shave haircut plugin to work without flicker issues and save some render times.I have used 3dlight before which uses deep shadow map when rendering fur and does so beautifully & mental ray also gives option of using detail shadow map which gives awesome shadow at half the speed or less than crazy vray render times.

If anyone has found any workaround in vray or anyother solution pls get back to me.

    Thanks,

    d

You need to use vray hair material 3 with gi, only way to get good render time with vray. No deep shadow fakes unfortunately, if you choose vray.

if you could post a small example of how its flickering it would be helpful also. Typically, the flickering can be due to low aa sampling and in the dmc sampler. You normally have to set the dmc sampler to something like 3/16 or 3/24 with low threshold to get more or less proper sampling from thin objects.

      hey,

Thanks for your reply ,i cannot share because the project is in production ,we are not using gi at all ,

i have 4 vray area lights + dome light in the scene with 50 samples each

min max sub div in vray render settings is min 2 max 50

      threshod is 0.010

      NO GI

we cannot use hair 3 mat since we are using shave haircut default mat ( is here any way i can copy these settings to vray hair mat3 from shave )

Thanks for your reply ,let me know if you guys render fur ( shave + vray ) using any other method etc

      Thanks

I used shave a lot before. and i had to use it with shave mtl. the rendering was a pain. i would suggest do not use domelight, as it creates a lot of samples in hair which will flicker and take long time to clean up. Do not use area lights, I went from area lights to spot lights or dir lights as it sped up the render time a lot, of course it didn't look as good but render time went down by factor of x10.

Now with that said, vray 3 offers some dramatic speed ups in hair rendering so it may be something to consider. Also, using hair material 3 (I know you didnt) but its specifically made to optimize rendering of hair.
