  • PTEX VDM Problem

    Hi there,

I'm using Mudbox 2015 to create a Ptex VDM (All settings are in the linked image) I send the base mesh back to Maya 2015 to render out in Vray 3.0.
But as you can see it all pulls apart at the seams??? I have tried changing every setting, spent a couple of days testing but cannot find a solution. Going to pull my hair out!

As stated, I am using PTEX and I have "Keep Continuity" ON, but doesn't seem to be having an effect? Using "Relative Tangent" but I have also tried "Object" but still get unsatifactory results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you im advance.

    Paul

Use object space displacement instead of "Absolute tangent". With the tangent space, you get cracks at the UV seams.

There is some more info here (it's for 3ds Max, but the approach in Maya is exactly the same):

        Best regards,

Thanks very much for your reply Vlado, yes I have tried that, but keep getting ripped seams - Here is a link to a test using Ptex and object space on a very simple poly plane.

It works very well for me, following the tutorial mentioned by Vlado:

Would you please download and render this scene:
            http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...splacement.zip

If you got the same result then there is something specific in your scene and we have to look at it(mudbox and maya files) in order to provide further assistance.

Hi Svetlozar, I really appreciate you assistance, thanks for posting a test file.... I will check that as soon as I can...
I have also sent my Mudbox and Maya file to Zdravko at Chaos Support... So hopefully between us we will find what I am doing wrong!

              Thanks again,
              Paul

Svetlozar, just tried rendering your scene, Yes it renders perfectly. Now I'm trying to find why mine didn't.

I did notice that your base mesh was 50x50 divisions, my test plane was 10x10.... would a low resolution cause the issue?
If that is the case my character's base mesh must be too low also.

I did another test with a 50X50 division plane and it worked.
                Thanks for your patience.

I think the issue may be related to the PTex filetring. Try to decrease it. 0.1 seems to wok well.

                      ivaylo.ivanov,
Excellent! "Filter Width 0.1" works very well in combination with the "Object Type" displacement.

I tested this with my original character model, it fixed the areas that were tearing in my original posted image but there are some triangles that still rip apart... so I will remove the triangles.

Thank you all very much for your assitance and patience.
