  • ocean displacement fade out

    Hello,

In a scene with a ocean simulator.
Is there a way to fade out the displacement of an ocean mesh? I need to increase the subdiv to get a nice result, but for animation the rendertimes, or loadingtimes, are too high. Bysides I don't need the displacement in the far areas.

    Thanks.

Well, this is the same kind of scene I was talking about. A simulator with an infinite sea. But in the far areas the sea is getting grainy because of the low subdiv. This to keep the rendertimes low. Is there another way to get an good result without increase the subdivs?

the video above has fade of the far areas displacement , i think you asked about something like this.
the lack of displacement leads to direct deflection, and the sky merges with the horizon.
you can try to replace the subdivs with a custom normal map with fade mask (to apply it only over the horizon).
the normals in such a mask must be directed mostly against the camera, this makes the horizon dark.

Is it possible to send the scene with this setup, because I'm not quit understanding what you trying to explain? Only the scene with the setup for understanding save me a lot of time of figure this out. Thank you.

unfortunately the result of the video is not achievable with the current version, it was made with an experimental build, with no horizon corrections at all
i was just asking you if this is what you need, eventually we can provide option to switch off the horizon correction (it's just a question of UI checkbox)

I have no problem with the horizon, but more with the horizon and, let's say, the boat. in that area the sea is going to be grainy and noisy because of the low subdivs. So I was wondering if I could achieve a good result but without raising the subdivs? This should work with an setup with a distance fade out for the displacement. The more the sea reach the horizon (furter away from camera) the less displacement. I can send you an image with explains you what I mean. How can I put an image on this forum? Because the 'insert image' button only let me link an url.
              Thanks

I will try now animation the displacement with a falloff map and look if this is decrease the grain and noise...
