  • Stuck buckets

    Hi!

I'm experiencing that some buckets that are getting stuck when rendering a high resolution image 6000x6000px of a large ocean. There is nothing particularly fancy or crazy going on in that area afaik, just random points in the ocean background.
I'm rendering with backburner on a slave that has particularly large amounts of memory and cores 32 threads (hyperthreading) and 128 gb memoery. With a low subdiv the scene uses around 80gb og memory while rendering, but there is still more memory left to go. Not sure why it gets stuck. It has been going over night and has eventually timed out and restarted it seems like.

    I'm using Phoenix FD 2.2 nightly version 2.25.01 and Vray for 3dsmax 2016 3.40.04 and 3dsmax 2016 sp3

(Btw, I'm only able to post in the "Public" forum, and I'mnot able to attach screengrabs from my computer. I'm not sure if that would be of any help?)

Replying to my own thread here. Maybe it's more of a V-ray issue, than a Phoenix FD issue, but I thougth initially it was related to Phoenix or the foam maps somehow. Anyways, I switched to progressive rendering as a workaround. So far it looks promising. I'm cautiously optimistic here!

Is there any way you could elevate my status so I could post in other forums here? Or does it have to be earned somehow?

may be the progressive sampler just hides the problem, but cant say more without deeper investigation.

        Hey,

You should drop a mail to support for the forum issues and they will give you access, but additionally it would be best if you could send a scene that can be used to reproduce the issue to support as well - you can check the exact Build ID in the About box of the Simulator rollout.

        Cheers!

Thanks Svetlin and Ivaylo. I will drop support an email, and I will try to make a stripped down version of the file, while hopefully still reproducing the issue.

            Hei again!

Iv'e sent an email to support with a file to try to reproduce the issue.

In the meantime I've switched to progressive rendering. It seems to work better (mostly). But sometimes it seems like progressive rendering also gets stuck and the image stop refining. The cpu's are not running on 100% while rendering anymore (See attached image). Normally they all do, right? When the time is up (I've set the limit to 60 min), the image does not seem to get saved and backburner doesn't go on to the next task.

Do you think it is related, and the progressive renderer is sometimes just masking the problem?

very probably it's related, you can help us to find the problem faster switching off elements of the scene - foam, ship, water, and testing if the issue is still present.

                Hi Markus,

The "stuck" bucket issue was reproduced here with your files, but I would like to run a few more tests before sending a bug report to our developers. Will keep you posted for any news.

                In regards to

I have tried different things. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the water (never had any problems when it is hidden), maybe it's the material. I've been experimenting with a blend material for the foam, and I noticed that I used a standard material for the white foam. I'm testing now with a vray material instead. I'll let you know when I'm more sure about things...

[EDIT:] Thank you for looking into it and thank you for upgrading my forum account!! ))

I think it has something to do with motion blur and ocean geometry but need more testing.
