  • Vray 3.6 Causes Rhino to Crash at Startup

I just updated Vray for Rhino to version 3.6 and I can no longer open several models which worked perfectly fine in the past.

I narrowed it down to being an issue with AutoCAD files inserted as blocks. If I rename the CAD file so Rhino can't find it, the file will open. Then I have to reassociate the block with the CAD file, after which I can work on the file and even save my work. But on restart I have to rename the link again. It will not reopen even after a save in which the file was hacked to work properly in the past. This is obviously less than ideal, especially for files with multiple block references of multiple CAD files.

    Please help with a fix!

    Hello,

    Thank you for reporting this!
Could you please send over one of the projects in question and associated CAD files for investigation?

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Same here, Rhino crashes on opening in many of my models. It seems to be related to linked blocks.
Models that have only embedded blocks open fine.
I've also tried to export a block, then reinsert it as linked block and Rhino crashed.

        Hello, Juan,

Thank you for letting us know!
Could you please go to https://download.chaosgroup.com/ , download V-Ray 3.6 for Rhino again (it is updated), install it, and then try the opening your projects again?
If this doesn't help, sharing a scene with us (and its associated blocks) would be appreciated!

SHELTON_MINDEL, please follow the same instruction and let me know how it goes!

        Kind regards,
        Peter

            Thanks, Peter.

I downloaded the new release and it seems to be working. I was able to open files with CAD linked blocks without a problem.

            Thank you

              Peter,
Scenes with linked blocks load fine now without crashing, however I came across a new problem. Cancelling a rendering in progress not always works. I've tried both clicking on the stop icon on the vFb as well as on the asset editor tea pot's red square. I've also tried entering manually the command visStopRender (to be deprecated) but I cant get out of the dialog neither entering 3 nor S ... (see attached) even though the render has stopped but the icons still show in red so effectively I cannot start the render again. I need to exit Rhino to reset.

Good to hear from both of you!

Juan, could you please tell whether this occurs only with specific scenes? Additionally, if the render has stopped, what happens when using the VFB's "Render last' button (at the top-right corner)?

                Kind regards,
                Peter

Sorry Peter, I have not been able to reproduce the problem in the same scene yet. I seems to render and stop fine so far ... I'll let you know if this happens again and try to document it.

(BTW, I love the new switch in the dome lights to lock the texture to the dome ! Makes my life SO much easier ... !. The ultimate wish would be now to be able to see it in the viewport background in real time. Please?? )

I am also experiencing 3.6 crashing Rhino at startup. However mine is crashing when vray for rhino tries to register as a plugin.

Keep in mind in v3.60.01 Dome Light transforms are now supported on all 3 axes.
A Dome Light to Rhino environment synchronization is not going to be introduced. You can run Interactive Render (either through the VFB or as Rhino viewport display mode) to adjust Dome Light position at any time.
