  • Sketchup crashing on open, gives error that suggests VRAY may be the source

Using Windows 10, Sketchup Pro 2018, VRAY 3.6.

Been using Sketchup every day for months. Today when I tried to open it, this was the message that I received. After clicking ok, Sketchup promptly closes and asks if I want to send an error report. Does not matter the file that is opened, or even if its a blank Sketchup file. Any idea what this means, or if its even VRAY related?

    Thanks in advance!
    Jacob

Update: After disabling VRAY in the extension manager, Sketchup runs fine.

Are you using 3.60.01 or 3.60.02? 3.60.02 has a fix for this issue that seems to have resolved this for the vast majority (but not all) of users that were experiencing this issue.

Hi Noel, thanks for the answer. Who would have thought the update solves the problem? lol. I updated and it works fine now! Thank you!

The issue has restarted. Sketchup and VRAY worked for a day. Now when I try and start up SU it crashes immediately. I don't have time to go in and turn off VRAY to see if that is causing the crash, as it crashes right away. Bug splat immediately, no error message like last time. What could this be?

We are relatively confident we know where the crash is coming from. A fix should find it's way into our nightlies shortly

Hi, I have a problem with SU crashing also, but mine crash after I press either render or editor button.
I tried reinstalling Sketchup and Vray in all combinations and it won't work.
I can work in Sketchup fine but as soon I try Vray it crashes.
I did install this new Vray for Unreal beta but I uninstalled it at problem persists.
              I am on Windows 10 Home 64bit, Vray 3.60.02 and Sketchup 2018.
Is there anything else I can post here to be useful to you?

                Hi trogled,

Could you please disable the Dynamic Components plugin (Window > Extension Manager) and all other 3rd party plugins, except V-Ray, and confirm if this resolves the issue?

Additionally, please make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2010/2015 Redistributable Packages x64 installed on the computer.

I did that, and still, it crashes SU. Thing is that I used Vray without problems, yesterday I installed Vray 4 beta to try it with Sketchup to Unreal workflow, just to test it out. I then used one of my scenes to export via Vray editor to vrayscene file. Then I import that scene with your plugin into Unreal. There were some problems with materials and light build so I then decided to make some simpler scene to then save to vrayscene. Somewhere in that when I ended apllaying standard Vray materials and test rendering it it broke and crash SU, since than i can not press Vray editor button nor rendering buttons. I can get vray cache but that is it, if I press render or editor button it crash SU. I have uninstalled Vray 4 beta also and on pics, you can see there are no plugins other than Vray enabled.

Hello, and thank you for your detailed reply!
At this point, my presumption is that the V-Ray for Unreal installation does not actually have anything to do with the issue in SketchUp. Would like to further investigate it though.
We can set up a remote viewing session using TeamViewer. If this is alright with you, please send me or georgi.georgiev a PM containing time/date that suits you (available on work days between 10:00-17:00 EEST).
Alternatively, we can send you a modified build and instructions for several test-case scenarios.

                    Kind regards,
                    Peter

So I have solved my problem by doing a really clean install of both Sketchup 2018 and Vray by deleting all folders of Sketchup 2018 and Vray from all programs folders (doing a search and delete) after uninstalling them first.
Also, I purged registry off all records for Sketchup 2018 and Vray.
I do not know if going through registry is needed or not but I did it anyway.
After that, I install them again and now Vray works just fine.
