What is the advantage of placing the sky map into a dome light?

just a regular light like all the others.

Im pretty sure for interiors where you need the sky light in through windows, the adaptive nature of the dome light made this efficient. Im not sure though, but thats what I thought was the main reason. It doesnt speed up exterior shots much from what I heard since you dont have the same stresses on the renderer.
