how about apply a vray light material set at 1 (or whatever looks white)
whack a vray colour map into the opacity slot and adust
vray properties -> uncheck all that GI affecting stuff.
I havent actually tried this, may be a complete faliure
ive tried that. didnt work. tried many things and nothing seems to work.

There seems to be a solution with a bit of a help from finaltoon however I just found out that finaltoon doesn't support vray proxies, or the other way around..
Piranesi seems to be a good solution as well but it's not really feasible to export import all the renders, when you consider that these sort of line renders are mostly done at an approval stage and clients demand tons of images with the line renders..
Here you can see what I could achieve with final toon because it supports drawing only the folding edge (outlines of an object) you can differentiate the objects from each other easily, is there a way to make the vray proxies detectable by the finaltoon, or is there anychance that we can get the vray toon detecting just the outlines of an object?

Yes, tried that already but when you have a few thousand proxies in the scene that doesn't work. I guess using proxies for this purpose is just out of question until a more advance version of the vray toon comes...
I am not on a computer that has max or vray at the moment. I have tried this in maya/mental ray and achieved the needed result. There is an option inside mentalray called visible to transparency and transmit transparency. They allow to get this exact result.
I did some tests in vray and also got this result. If you set vray material color to black, set refraction color to mid gray, set refraction ior to 1, and refraction trace depth to 1 also, and make the objects not visible to reflect/refract this should give the same result.
I guess this is the closest we can get to flat opacity, setting the object material is black is a bit of an inconvenience when you want to make the object pure white but I guess that can be sorted out by whitening the diffuse a bit, adding some extra lights and lighting all surfaces of the object evenly.
Now, if only we could get vray toon to trace just the outline of an object.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but Im wondering if anyone has come up with anything in the last few years. I need to render exactly whats in the original post.
Silhouette people that are flat colour, but 50% opacity.
Ive tried the obvious techniques (opacity map, refraction etc.) But I awlays end up seeing the backs of their eyeballs and teeth
Invisible to refraction is undesirable as well, I need to be able to see other silhouettes through foreground silhouettes (and through glass etc). Is this still impossible to achieve?
Reason I want to do it in Max is that the camera will be moving as well as people walking, running, etc etc. Close by crowds of people, not just 1 or 2, more like 30 - 40 ppl.
I think that this could be done in post only. Render the main scene with all People (Visible to camera Off) then render second pass only with them (V-ray light mtl or regular one with self illumination).
At the end you can merge everything together in post.
