  • Rock Face Question

Attached are two pics of rock faces made of limestone and I would appreciate some suggestions on how to create similar rock structures. I could use a VrayDisplacement but since the pattern is so irregular I'm not sure how that would work. I think poly-modelling this would be brutal since the rock will be pretty long in length (almost 300 feet) and will be seen from a slight aerial view. I was checking out some tutorials but since these are layered rocks those tutorials wouldn't help. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you all.

I have done exactly that kind of setup year ago.
It's using low poly base model and heavy procedural texture setup with displacement.

I'll try to find that scene today and send it to you, if it helps.

Vraydisplacement can do the job imo...
just make a low-poly to get the global shape of desired rock.
      Then, unwrap the uv's
to get consistent/seamless texture, you can create the texture using the viewport canvas to "paint" directly the rock texture on your low poly model
when you're done, use the same texture/uv channel (or improved black&white version) for your VrayDisp modifier. It should work fine.

Bertrand Benoit did something very similar for his cg house challenge submission over at ronen's forum:

he might be able to help with the boulders setup if you drop him a message.

          Thanks for the replies.

Lars: I would appreciate the help.

Subburb: I've never used the unwrap modifier. I keep on wanting to check out how to do it but I forget before I get around to it. That seems like the best way to get a good/seamless texture though.

Rivoli: I was just looking at Ronen's site yesterday and checking out all of the tutorials. Thanks.

I will post what I have so far.

Okay, I found the scene and some demo renders. Not so great as I remembered, but quite ok for only one material setup. But yeah, still totally work in progress.

I can send the scene at Monday, because it needs some clean up first. Now I'm just too busy with current project.

That looks great Lars. Much better than what I came up with.

If its a still, do a camera projection with your images and use as a displacement texture, very simple and with great results!
You might need some bigger images though: www.cgtextures.com
