  • hdri map types - which to use ?

Hi, my first post in this forum, but i'm quite famailiar with it...

I was wondering which type of hdri map is the best : Cross, probe, or spherical ? What are they pros and cons ?

Is one type best used with animations and another for still images ?

    Thx in advance

It all depends on what type of HDRI you have.

The different types (Cross, probe, or spherical) dont have pros or cons because you choose the mapping that suits the HDRI. For instance if you have a spherical HDRI you choose spherical, if you choose the wrong one the HDRI will look warpped as it was not made to be mapped that way.

for those you would use spherical.

Most hdri's are in spherical format, the ones that arnt are easily converted into spherical format by using hdrshop...there are tuts on the net.

i agree but then why Dosch Design provides all his hdri libraries in 4 differents formats, and the probe formats are bigger files (containing much information ?)

Also, the probe formats from dosch design are not loading correctly in vray... The solution is to use their spherical version or to convert the porbes into sphericals with hdrshop (i've not tried yet, but maybe the file will be at a higher resolution)

thx anyway for your answers !

To be honest im not sure why they would do that. Maybe different programs can only work with certain types of HDRI's.

But either way no matter how a HDRI is mapped, or converted then mapped it will stick work look the same in the 3d app.

Some apps, for instance Lightwave, use a similar layout as the cross we can use with "box" but it's just rotated to landscape instead of portrait.

Dosch Design probably gives the probe layout at higher res because they were the original photos taken.

I think cubic mapping is the best because it has (my opinion) the least distrosion.

Sorry, I'm really tired and should step away from the keyboard

I know what WIP is :P

To interpret the Emoticons ... It looks great, don't change a thing It looks realistic, nicely composed and yet it has an artistic painterly feal to it.

I guess I was questioning why you say WIP but I guess almost everything is always a WIP, IN fact, I've edited this message twice now

What were you thinking of changing?

Does it use HDRI now or are those VRay lights?

heheheh I was pretty sure you knew what WIP was, but i just couldnt make out your message.

Thanks, i am trying to get a realistic candle to go in my bathroom scene. Im try to go for a nice moody scene, candles, bubble bath....maybe some barry white hahahah

The reason i say its WIP is because i have not spent that much time on it and i think the wax material still needs work, plus the model needs more smaller drips modelled into it.

And im also keen to try and find out a good way to add an animated flame with glow. At the moment i added that flame and its glow in photoshop, but i wish to have something that can be completely done in max and also be renderable in vray. So its kind of a tricky quest im on. Im waiting for tbe max6 release of phoenix, or just some time to learn afterburn.

The lighting at the moment is a vray light (spherical) where the flame is to produce the nice wax effects, there is also a touch of skylight just to brighten up the rest of the candle. And a hdri for reflections but not for lighting.

                            Good combination of techniques.

Okay, let's not hijack this thread... whoops

anyway, can't wait to see the final.

                              Hey you've hijacked my thread !!! :P

losbellos : maybe there is less distortion at zentih, but on the horizon the least distorition will be achieved with a spherical ...
