    I gather there is no way to do this currently with either of the path tracers?

      When the BDPT can render atmos will they resolve any better than with the path tracer? Also with the vertex merging/photon/path code that you are working on will it natively handle volume caustics?

          The directly visible caustics - yes.

          It can be made to work for volumes, yes.
