Ask to see a photograph as an example. It sounds like someone who knows enough to be dangerous. In my experience, subtle wins. I set my white balance and I apply a subtle PS photo filter to warm things up, but I do it so you can only really tell when you toggle it off/on. Personally, I don't like the yellow overcast that you get without a white balance, a photographer would get fired if he didn't correct it.

Well here are the things off the top of my head which would make your rendering more photorealistic.
1) Add fire suppression sprinklers.
2) Add air vents.
3) Mix up the color of the counter tops of the vendors.
4) If that back wall is supposed to be shops, use shops of photos in the background to break up the color.
5) Add a little more variation in tone and color to the floor tiles.
6) Add an edge-chamfer bump to everything.
7) Add some muti-colored lights in each of the vendor.
Post-processing.
9) More variation in the furniture. That photo has different colored chairs and just different colors in general so that it's not one of two exact colors.
Ultimately anything that breaks up the monotone grayness of the rendering will give it more reality. If it's too dark you also might want to add more bounces of GI. The difference between 1 and 3 bounces can be very large sometimes.
Their example for instance is a mixed color temperature situation where they have daylight at 5600 coming in from a skylight and back windows. That doesn't appear to be possible in this case. But if you try white-balancing the image it's informative to see how much variation there is in the color of the light which gives it subliminal reality. It might look "orange" and warm, but within that orange there is a lot of color revealed if you white balance the camera for orange. Look at how much variation there is in the color. I don't recommend going that extreme but it demonstrates well that there's usually some variation unless you have the budget for a photo shoot to replace all the lighting in a scene with consistent practical bulbs etc.

With the suggested changes and such i would also add the lighting for the food vendors as well because the light from inside those will also spill in to the main hall and add a bit more to make it look less dark. Judging from your reference photo the food vendors are a cooler colour and brighter compared to the rest of the pot lights in the main hall.Cheers,
