  • Testing Hybrid rendering

I installed 3.6 the other day to try hybrid rendering for the first time.

I opened up an interior scene (BF LC) and did a small bucket render, noise threshold was at 0.015. I then changed the production renderer to RT and enabled hybrid with the same threshold.

I understand this is isn?t the best comparison, I?m not familiar with any of the other RT optimisation settings (if there are any) but the hybrid mode was slower and noisier.

Just wondering how you might introduce yourself to hybrid rendering and get comparable results quality wise and faster? In this test I added a 1080ti to my threadripper.

I made sure I went for a huge case should I need to beef up my farm.

    Can you show me?

The image that I?m rendering? Or the settings, or both?

The image, I just want to see what it looks like.

Thanks. Our GPU guys want to take a look at the scene, if possible? This hardware configuration should be must faster with the hybrid mode. You can send it to vlado@chaosgroup.com

No probs, I'll archive it tomorrow and send you a download link. Thanks

I've made some tests trying to compare the renders more fairly.

                - V-Ray Adv in max is a completely different engine from V-Ray (RT) GPU so these tests are a product of technical and not so technical guessing of settings and matching noise levels.

The best thing you can do when comparing a scene that was already setup is to reset the render settings (f.e. by switching between the renders). In the images below all settings are default with a noise threshold set to 0.015 and Bucket max subdivs changed to match the noise levels in the GPU rendered images.

The scene you've sent seems to differ from the one you posted, but maybe that shouldn't matter.

                Here are the results:

                Bucket with max subdivs 16 = 6m 32s
                Bucket with max subdivs 12 = 4m 35s
                GPU only = 3m 54s
                Hybrid = 3m 32s

All of these are rendered in low res (480 x 270) on a i7 4790 + Titan X. I'll make some more tests in higher resolution if necessary.

If it was that easy, it would have already been done
