  • Creating localised fingerprints/foot prints

    Would I be correct in assuming that in order to create some fingerprints or foot prints in a certain area of a polished floor, that I would need to create an alpha mask in photoshop?

    I kind of know how to do this, but not the process in getting there..
    I think I need to create a mask using the bake to texture feature in max? And then export that into photoshop, paint the area where I want the texture exposed in white (everything else black) and then import that back into the material editor and use it as a mask?

    Ref photo Below. I'm trying to create some grunge marks around the chairs to replicate foot traffic.

    Turns out I needed to learn how to vertex paint the area and use that as a mask.

      Or do a basic object unwrap for the floor. Planar mapping would definitely be enough for this task and create a more elaborate mask in photoshop.
      But since you already sorted it out, there is no need to do that :P

        or if its just one area you can maybe quickly map it as a decal on separate channel (with uvw map modifier and tiling turned off in taxture)

          you can also use viewport canvas instead of vertex paint (most likely more detail possible).

            All good examples. Which would have been helpful BEFORE I FIGURED IT OUT MYSELF hahaha .

                  Thanks. It's a very very simple scene. Just using it to experiment.
                  I Just used some basic bump, reflect and gloss maps and a grunge map with vertex paint for the dust area.

                      Sure. The material is just my wooden floor with a white coat over the top and controlled by the texture itself using vertex paint and a triplaner map. I've attached the texture. It's just a finger print texture but you can't tell because of the angle of the camera and the tilling used. Doesn't have to be this texture. Could be anything you want with a bit of randomness. Even a cell map!

                        thanks for sharing. interesting map to use for a floor, but I guess it works if you scale it up and dont get too close great inspiration!
