        Thanx Gilicom,
I tried this and in general, when in SOL selection, Ctrl+any other SOLevel pick = selects adjacent verts, edges or polys.

Small note about the Ctrl + Remove tip for removing edges & verts on Epolys. You can also use the keyboard to do the same thing:
            Ctrl + Backspace

              Cool thanks for that.

It also works in the Quad. Ctrl + click Remove from the quad menu.

My exciting new tip - if you've performed a command from a quad menu (i.e it's highlighted in blue), you can just click on the name of the quad menu it's listed in to perform it again.

                        Show Backface Verts

A long time ago max used to show ALL verts of your object when working in Sub Object Mode. Now, though, by default, backface verts are hidden. For me this is a real pain when I am modeling, I like to know where every vert is hiding.

If you'd like to always show all verts when working in S/O mode then add the following line to your 3dsmax.ini file under the [Performance] heading:

                        ShowBackFaceVertices=1

This tip was passed on to me a long time ago and it's helped me a lot.

this doesn't work because you're in the sub-object mode...
there's an option for "keyboard shortcut override toggle" (ksot), you can add this to your toolbar or a quad-menu.
many shortcuts work differently when you're in different modes, eg:
                          1. pressing "X" will normally make your 'transform-gizmo' disappear, but when you're in the material editor, it'll toggle between 6/15/24 materials boxes. pressing "ksot" you can switch between the two options
                          2. pressing "s" you can turn your snap on or off. but in the edit-poly sub-object mode, it's a slice modifier. again "ksot" will let you choose what you want.
                          3. ctrl+I is normally invert selection. but in edit poly sub-object it is inset. ksot lets u choose...
                          4. pressing W allows you to choose "move" transformation, but W in edit-poly mode iw for welding...
                          5. Ctr+D is normally Deselect, but in edit mesh, it's Detach.
                          6. A is normally to toggle between turning angular snap on or off, but in Track View it is to "Add Keys", in edit poly, it does "Auto Smooth" and in the "walkthrough" mode, it allows you to go "left"

so, in other words, "ksot" let's you have the same key shortcut work for many different options in various conditions...

this is the backface cull settings... go to
                            Preference Settings | Viewports
Turn on or off the "Backface Cull on Object Creation" depening upon how you like it...

This can be correct by tun on the KEY TOGGLE OVER RIDE BUTTON

just saw this on a tutorial.....

right mouse click - goto properties, under display properties select "see through"

                                or

                                alt X

                                seems to work well!

How I can make my selected face color 50% transparant?? I wanne be able to see the texture shine through the selected face color. I know it's possible because the guys from cg-academy are doing it on their uv unwrapping dvd, but I can't see what they are doing. Since I see no clicking it must be a keyboard shortcut. I checked the help and can't find anything about it!

This should show the checker texture too, at least a little bit:
