DaForce: Thanks, fella. I drove my colleagues mad that day with my stylus: tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap
I had noticed the splotches, yeah, I meant to go back and sort them out but obviously forgot. This was one of the first images I did with VRay (VRay Free, I think) and I didn't know what those artifacts were. I'm pretty familiar with them now...if you've seen one CG shopping centre, you've seen a mall...

Errrr...I don't know what tips to give really, Da Elf.
I had some good photo references, and like I said I've got a Wacom tablet & stylus which makes painting in PS a doddle.
I used a water/noise mixed bump map on a flat plane for the river water, then added a mesh smooth modifier on the water plane just around the faces at the front of the ferry. The river plane is bound to a couple of 'Wake' WSMs (from BlurStudios, I think) to get the ripples along the side of the ferry.
In Photoshop, I used 2 soft brushes, a 1 pixel and a 3 pixel, with about 80% opacity. The important thing to remember when doing the foam is to follow the surface of the water, which is why it helps to have clearly defined ripples etc. For the spray I just went mad with the stylus: tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap
I don't know what else to say except that occasionally holding your thumb up in front of the monitor seems to help, as does regarding your monitor from the other side of the office with your head at a strange angle, frowning, tutting, clicking your tongue and muttering to yourself about how Monet never had to worry about 'scratch disks'.
Hope this helps anywayif you've seen one CG shopping centre, you've seen a mall...
