ive been asked to recreate this. apparently the artist did this a long time ago and lots of changes were made. there shall be lots of landscaping to this project obviously however my biggest concern is the waterfall. the whole waterfall will be rock unlike what the artist did by leaving a section bare. how should i go about tackeling a splashing waterfall. this is for a still image....keep in mind im working with the drawings from the architects. so if my proportions look off compaired to the artists work its because his proportions are wrong.
    artist rendition

    what ive done so far.

    Da_elf: Photoshop!

If you're just producing stills, then I'd recommend doing the waterfall post-rendering. I've never done a waterfall, but I've struggled with water effects myself. I don't have any of the big-end plugins for this sort of thing, and I was very disappointed with the results from the Max Particle systems, so I tend to do this in Photoshop:

If you have a Wacom tablet or similar, you'll find it a piece of cake, I reckon.

Failing that, there used to be a sample scene that cam with Max (3, 4 or 5?) with a waterfall in it.

Good luck, anyway, look forward to seeing your final result.

I remember seeing this done on a vizdepot challenge. Rendered in mental ray, but all done with masks. Never got round to giving it a go myself, but might come in handy.......

Here's another method (mine) I was playing with for the same challenge. Let us know if you come up with something better.

thanks for the help. seems photoshop will need to be the thing. none of those tutorials will help since i already know that stuff the problem is that it isnt a normal straight waterfall. a sculpted rockface will be there so i need water flowing over rock.

well i had a similiar task to accomplish and I used reactor cloth to conform a plane over the rocks then basically used same approach as others.

percy. thats brilliant. i could probably do the same with simcloth. pin the edge at the top of the waterfall then let the cloth drape over the rocks. then i can trim off excess on the bottom or something after i colapse to editable poly

I really gotta learn how to do that sorta stuff one day. Would be very handy.
Also have you noticed the weird color splotches in those renders of yours?

                              Da_Elf:
How close is the shot going to be? Or are you just reproducing the drawing.. same camera angle and everything?
