I have no reason to adopt the linear workflow.

95% of our work is exterior.

      99% of that is stills.

It would have been nice if the application for linear workflow had been outlined from the start.

It seems to be too much trouble, especially when we can achieve results beyond our clients expectations without adopting a new workflow.

3ddesign, thanks for this thread as it has put to rest (for now) the need to confuse my workmates further

I've heard this alot and I can't understand why this would be the case. If LWF is setup to more accurately mimic how light is distributed in a scene, wouldn't this hold true for exteriors as well? I've used LWF on some exteriors and it seems to work fine. Granted I do adjust the secondary bounce multiplier down a little (to about .75) but this isn't negating the effects of LWF. Can anyone elaborate on this a little more?

Don't get me wrong, I intend to implement LWF once it is proven worthwhile for exteriors, but at this point it would be like trying to implement HDRi environment lighting for exterior arch-vis. I can see the benefits, but they just are not justified yet.

I think it has been proven many times now. Like dlparisi said, it is good for interiors so why not for exteriors. It helps with natural looking light, excessive color bleed, dark parts of the image (for example the interior in an exterior shot), etc...

You don't have to adopt the full linear workflow thing to benefit from the gamma improvement only, actually it's no hassle at all and you can easily switch between the two (for example if you need to open an old file).

there is an exterior scene that had been done with LWF floating around here somewhere. Have a look at it and then pass judgement on LWF

argh... wasnt there an issue with color correct and VRay? It is sweet but I worry about long time support for a freebee plugin. Any chance of getting a similar behavior native to VRay? I believe the issue was rare but I cant help but sweat, used it already on some isolated projects, with great results.

                    colorcorrect isnt all that important.
Its mainly used to color match when converting an old scene to LWF

and one more thing (cause Im like Mongo, forhead like a drive in theater) anyway. (I did read this a couple times, and the others but need to make sure I get it) Lol like juju said worried about not getting the short, short version

Why use the VRay VFB and not MAX VFB to see the rendering if the VRay VFB ignores the MAX gamma, I mean other than for writing floating files?
I dont think I understand the gamma related to the rendered image if its not visible (again outside of applying space in post)

The MAX FB double corrects the image... so its ultrabright (or maybe its the other way around.. its too dark)

lol cant remember.. and cant test now. Either way the saved image is wrong.

Eh? Lost me there, in that case how is it double correcting? So the VRay VFB is showing us the correct gamma and the MAX is showing us gamma x2?

yeah pretty much.. max gamma and the gamma correction.

You can however get around that by choose override gamma in the save window and choose 1.0

Ok cool, I got that now.
So wouldnt we want to continue to use the color correct though, to make
                              sure colors are accurate?

No, because of the max gamma they are correct anyway.

the only reason to use color correct is to match the texture gamma you had in your old scene. AFAIK

For new scene it isnt needed because you will be lighting differently as the renders will look different
