        • is this method still 'current' now we have x64 gamma correction?

          • this is a completely different method than using color correct.

            its a far better method.

            • This is not a 'can you tell which one is the photo' .... I think that much is obvious but I thought I would post this as my findings. I basically tried to recreate the same sort of light as one of our photographs to see how accurate I could get this and Im pleased with the result.

The Scene uses an unaltered vraysky and vray sun, the vraycamera has exactly the same settings as the camera that was used to take the photograph. The only thing that has been altered is the rgb of the materials. Now I will fess up, I did do a teeny amout of post work done in photoshop and postwork I mean that I slightly adjusted the gamma balance, and a litte adjustment to saturation... really very little in it.

              • Nice, very similar light distribution between the two.
I don't quite understand, though, did you lower the diffuse coefficient, or left it as per usual?

                  • For the materials I just used your script, but because the light was almost horizontal (alot darker and therefor kindof the opposite of being directly over head), instead of using .255 as a starting value I used a 0.75. This was just an educated guess according to the sun angle. Then for the whites I put it up to .85 or thereabouts, and for the darks I darkened it accordingly.

                    • glad to hear and see the method works.
Gladder still to hear you didn't stick to .255 for your life, but correctly interpreted what happens

                      • Its actually a deceptively simple technique, but understanding what to change and in what circumstance took me a good few days to get my head round.

                        Thanks again for the 'enlightenment'

                        • I was using this technique to accurately control the colours, but because the RC4+ have the gamma dial in the VrayColour, you can just set that once and get on with setting your colours as you would normally. Works a treat, and even simpler.

                            • your maps are automatically getting set to 2.2 gamma on import if you have it set-up correctly in the max preferences. I don't see the problem, unless Im missing the point totally!

                              • so do u colors if ur setting max to.
..the all point bout the .255 workflow is to darken ur materials so that all the combo vraysky+vraysun+vraycamera works in a predictable way...(please correct me if i m wrong! )
