  • splotchy and blotchy

hi everyone, i am new to vray sky and sun and vray physical cam.
i am here to ask about the elimination of those splotch and blotch (in this case the splotch and blotches are on the left wall of my scene, it's not obvious, it's just bothers me alot) that occurs everytime i render with vray sun and sky for interior scene.
    my settings are:
    irrmap: everything default, low
    lightcache : subdivision 200
    ticked the pre-filter
ticked the "use lightcahce for glossy ray"
    color mapping : reinhard
    multiplier :1
    burn value : 0.8
    gamma : 1.8
    vray sun : intensity multiplier : 0.05

vray cam :shutter speed : 1

the rest i left it at default.

the reason why i lower the sun intensity multiplier is that i don't really like to type a lots of zeros behind my other vray lights' intensity multiplier.
i hope some of you good people will help me on this issue, because i really like doing scene with vraysun/sky system. they are fast, and produce nicer results.

ps: the reason why i did it with irrmap, is to have a fast rendering. i know if i change it to vlado's universal settings, the rendering would become much nicer, but i don't have the luxury for time....

    thanks again

What resolution is your rendering ?

I found that lowering the adaptative amount in the rQmc sampler to 0,7~0,8 did solve this kind of problem without increasing much the render time. But i had those spots only in big size renderings (2400+)

    Hope this helps

      thanks pixelabs,
      i did it 1500 width.
      i will try your suggestion
      thanks again

Dominique, I think it's related to the very low LC value of 200. If this was between 600-800 it would help.

Also, the 'prefilter' and 'Interp. samples' values are important. The higher the values the more blur is applied to the LC. I find good values are between 20 and 40.

thanks rob, but i guess it's not the low lc that's causing this problem. i follow olli's (you can see his work and his settings. and it's working very well. thanks to olli by the way_ here it is. by the way my lc stays at 200

Nice image! I like the shag carpet. You still have a shading problem on the white front of the drawers next to the bed. A higher interp. samples (raise it from 20 to 25 or 30) should fix this problem.

Ooooh ... what did you do to solve it?

That is a damn fine looking render.
                Congrats.

thanks mmike! didn't expect any compliment in this tutorial section though..but thanks!

hi rob, this is the setting:

                  Rendersettings are:
                  AA: Adaptive QMC 2/8 | Catmull-Rom
IR: Medium Preset | 50 HShp Samples | 25 Interpol. Samples
                  LC: 200 | Size 0,01
Color Mapping: Reinhard | Burn value: 0,15 gamma 1.8
                  rQMC: 0,7 | 0,005 | 20 | 2

i copy paste this from olli96 thread in image upload.(except i change the lc to 200)
                  thanks olli!

don't you still have the splotches by the bedside table?
I'm personally a bit thrown off by all these values, when i am not told the reason for them (lc 0.01, 200 samples: why 0.01, what was wrong with 0.02, and why 200, and not 500, or 750, and so forth), or when i see min qmc samples to 2 (what would 1 do? why not lowering noise thresholds to have it bias towards max, etc.), or the global subdivs set to 2 (ie, the hsph samples given are actually half of what they are during rendering given this parameter. So why not raising those alone to 100, instead of doubling also the QMC AA samples and so on?).
Also, what happened to the rendertimes?
                      I'm very very curious...

Of course, if it works for you i am mighty fine, but i would have liked an explanation, myself, so to understand what it is i kept doing wrong by NOT touching those values at pleasure, but rather resorting to specific tweaks in specific areas...

It IS the tips and tricks section, after all...

might help to answer some qustions. at least it helped me

Yes,lele, you are correct to asked these question..
but for me, not very expert in those terms,
subdivisions, aa samplings,etc.. those values seems very confusing. for example i don't really notice the difference between lightcache value of 200 and 2000 at the final result (at 1000 pix width)...and 200 is very much faster compare to 2000. i have been working, judging with my eyes (apparently my eyes are not as good as others) and if let's say the result is acceptable to the big bugger in the office, i will give it a rest.
since they torture me with 15 visuals in 5 days, what can i do man, i am not really fast in modelling, and very poor at lighting. the only thing i did was search for fast acceptable result so they (buggers in the office) can pitch for their cheap lowcost projects..... sigh... but lele, have faith in me, if i have more time, really really, i want to know the meaning of everysingle term in vray rendering panel....

maybe too much displacement in the carpet. How did you achieve the border of the carpet, I have seen a tut about it, but cant remember where???

add some bump in your floor. Wood are not like that in real life. There is crack between some plank. Add some gradient in your map too ( same as some plank) it will look like some side are higher then others. ...
