  • If thumbnail of .max-file isn't showing up in Windows Explorer

I just read a thread on another forum about this question. If you want to have displayed a viewport thumbnail of your 3ds max scene within Windows Explorer, there are some things to check.
    • Make sure, you've thumbnail preview enabled in Explorer
    • In 3ds max goto Customize --> Preferences --> Files --> "Save Viewport Thumbnail Image" == checked

If this won't help, download the attached file and add the information of the .reg-file to your registry.

    Should work now!

Thank you very much! The only way we could get windows to display thumbnails was to install a max 8 instance too on our workstations. For some reasons, we have to keep a max 8 ready, and this was one of them.

    Best regards,
    A.

Just a thought - did this not lead to file corruption in some cases? It might have been a while back but I think if one of your max files got messed up, it made windows explorer freak out when you selected it.

I seem to remember something about this...

I never featured this problem, but will try this out in a few seconds. Please keep me posted, if you encounter sth you just mentioned.

I just corrupted a test file. 3ds max popped up a message "File open failed". A thumbnail is no longer shown within Explorer.
