I just read a thread on another forum about this question. If you want to have displayed a viewport thumbnail of your 3ds max scene within Windows Explorer, there are some things to check.
If this won't help, download the attached file and add the information of the .reg-file to your registry.
Should work now!

- Make sure, you've thumbnail preview enabled in Explorer
- In 3ds max goto Customize --> Preferences --> Files --> "Save Viewport Thumbnail Image" == checked
