Re: RAM patch for SU to use more than 2GB?

would changing the settings in windows to allow programs to use more ram be a better option for those weary of bugs? are there any consequences to doing this?

that doesn't involve hacking a piece of software, so yes, that would be fine. Changing settings in an expected way is good, hacking software... not good.

Thanks a lot for this tool. It essentially saved me from killing myself at work! I had a large model with lots of texture etc. and I had not been able to render it as once the memory hit 1.6gb VRay started rendering black (memory allocation error). With this tool, I patched the sketchup.exe and it fixed it. Now sketchup can allocate memory up and above 2gb though I don't really know the exact limit at the moment. This is simple a godsend, period.

Works for me. I'n now able to render my 90 mb model which was impossible before.

If you have no critics you'll likely have no success.

                    Hi Newgate.

Here's the link to a brief explanation on what the RAM patch does.
                    http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?to...19093#msg19093

Basically it's a free distributable software installed onto your computer, accessing to your machine's RAM allocation to allow SketchUp more RAM access. That way, if you have complex model (big files, lots of materials, textures, and blocks) high chances are that you will not experience any problem that most of us encounter. It is not a guarantee though (this stuff is not supported by ASGVIS). So if you want to install, do so on your own risk (your SketchUp, your VfSU, or even your machine fall under the risk involved). Some of the problems that I find solved using this patch are:
                    1. black render spots (memory allocation error)
                    2. temp files full (not rendering)
                    3. error console
                    4. stuff that happens when you have complex model

WARNING: IT DOESN'T ALWAYS SOLVE EVERYTHING FOR ME.

The latest version of SketchUp is LargeAddressAware, which should allow it to use more RAM. This patch may not be necessary at all anymore.

Thanks Devin. I was wondering about that myself. Has anyone confirmed the memory address increase (for example tested a model that crashed before in SU7 and was able to render in SU8M1?)

I am still using v7.1 but haven't run into memory issues thus far. I am still waiting for a compelling reason to transfer my bucket load of plugins and vray over to SU8. (since I'm using the free version, the missing dwg import in SU8 is the one big negative for me.)

incredible 3.2 gigabytes! ... in win xp 64 bits and sketchup 8...

a question, I just have to patch one time? or every time I start sketchup?
                          thanks!!

Guys! Devin (dkendig) has announced that Google SketchUp has addressed the needs of more RAM in new version. This thread is actually not needed anymore.
