  • Facke object duplicates in rhino

Ok guys. I've been struggling with an issue for a long time now. Every time I need to decor a scene, I have to use a lot of 3d meshses, this allways, wallways slows down my PC, no matter what video card I have, or hoy much RAM or what kind of processor, is slows down.

Now, One of mny co-workers said he worked at a previous place where they used a "cloner" to create fake object duplicates.

How did it work?, mostly as inserting an instance of a block, but it apparently places a "virtual" instance of an object, a fake object which of course does not slow down your PC cuz its not a reall 3d object or mesh.
However, I've been googling for three days and haven found anything on the WEB.

If any of you know how this plugin is called, or where to find it, I would really aprreciate it. Even willing to exchange my texture library (over 2gb) and IES library for this info.

Thanks for all the light you can shed.

I realise it has been a long time since you posted, but, there are a few things you can do to speed up your performance. You say it doesn't matter what video card you use?. . . it does, but first:

    - In Rhino, go to 'document properties' (right click the blue sphere on your main toolbar), then to 'Appearance' then 'OpenGL'

Under OpenGL, make sure 'use accelerated hardware modes' is checked. This will make a massive difference if it wasn't already in use.

Also, to use a 'block instance', simply create some geometry, save it as a 3DM (Rhino native file format) then in your new 3DM file go File>Insert, find your geometry you want in your file and 'insert as block instance'. . .

    Hope this helps

      Careful with blocks!
Textures aren't inserted properly when using .3dm files as block input.

Do it the way Micha showed off some time ago:

      - finish object
      - apply materials and texture mappings
      - extract rendermesh
      - export as .obj

      - insert .obj mesh file as block instance
      - re-assign materials

      ...and you're fine.
Otherwise, Rhino does not recognise texture coordinates relative to the object, but to world coordinate system - leading to a total mess when moving the block around.

      Cheers,
      m

Re: Facke object duplicates in rhino

I don't typically use Blocks for rendering. . . and never for anything with a texture applied

In your experience Mattias, does it save much memory?

        Cheers

Well, I'm using dozens or even hundreds of instances of our cans for a rendering - filling up coolers or displays. Surely, using blocks saves over a 100mb per file. And because I usually save incrementally, this saves some gigs in each project folder!
