  • Symbols and creating a mesh in Rhino/VRAY?

Just wondering what the best way to create a a fence like mesh structure? Like cladding/fencing applications, flat surface with lots of perforations which transmit light through the openings, however small/large these may be depending on the density of the mesh? I'm fairly new to Rhino/VRAY so excuse the ignorance if this is a simple task!

Guess could model the fence in Rhino then render but suspect this will create a very complicated/large file, wondered if there was a way to use VRAY to achieve desired outcome? Displacement maps etc but not sure how could create the openings?

Might not be the best place to post this but while I was at it, does Rhino have the equivalent of Vectorworks symbols, ie draw series of objects/lines etc and convert to a symbol so if an instance is updated all the instances of the symbol are also automatically updated?

    Thanks!

Can you show us a picture of the kind of fence that you want to create?

About the symbols you should try Blocks, that's how they are named in Rhino.
If you are going to use blocks be aweare that there is a problem with the UV mapping.

      Command works like this:
+ First you enter the command Block and select the objects that are going to be in the block.
+ Define the base point by clicking were you want to be the base point.
+ Name the block and add a description

**You can also use this plug-in to edit Blocks in place:
      + Block Editor

Something like this, so I could model it and have the effect of lighting behind it, casting appropriate shadows.

In my opinion, you should use a mask + transparency material. It will be lighter to handle and to render.

Thanks LeoBonilla, would you be able to elaborate on how to do this or point me at a tutorial explaining? Haven't done anything like this before. thanks
