  • help! vray newbie needs advice for 3ds max 5/6

    Hello,
I have a lot of experience modeling in 3ds max 5/6 but am having a lot of issues getting nice renders using the default scanline renderers. I see so many posts of people posting their great photorealistic cars, scenes, etc. but i haven't been able to achieve these and i just got the demo version of Vray and the free version as well. Any ideas on how to get started in achieving these results? for example, lighting the robot on the vray page (top of the screen) - I can model it just fine, but the final renders look flat and uninteresting. Is this a lighting thing or is it just the scanline renderer is not good enough? any tips would be appreciated..
    thanks!

    hi

well did i understand you right ? you use the max scannliner for rendering,
or now you take vray free for it ?

maybe you should post one of your testscenes, a screenshot of the settings, and so on.

so we could give you much better and specific help.

At las start with smal scenes. Rather exterior than interior. interior lightning is muchmore difficult.

you also should read carefully the manual. there are lot of things you have to understand, to use the right settings.

and at last maybe try to search for examples here in the forum. Sometimes people does not only post immages, but also scenes.
You could try them, and after this question the people about it.

well use vray materials everywhere in your scene , load vray to your default renderer, and make simple setups.

Gi on, one vraylight, environement light, and do it step by step.

change only one setting the time, and you will soon see the differences

    good luck

    Tom

      thanks...

Thanks for the advice.. I'm just trying to get results like the people who post on the forum. I originally thought it would be easy as 1-23 and just getting Vray would improve the model's render instantly, almost... I guess not! In any case, I have the vray advance 30 day demo, I'll try it out and play with the settings and materials..
      thanks!

        an example please..

If its not too much trouble, can someone post a simple Clay rendering tutorial? I'm not even getting those nice smooth clay-ey renders...

I don't understand how you have a demo of the advance version. I wanted to try it, but the demo version available for download has expired.

I just went to the vray site, registered, and downloaded the demo...
            http://www.vrayrender.com/demo/
the links were there to download the different demo versions (free and 10903p... I also had the free version installed, maybe I'm making a mistake? Like i said, I was new to Vray... I didnt get any error message within MAX or any dialog box saying the demo expired...

i think someone is not quite used to using diffrent renderers, its more then just installing them, cant say i know anything about vray but if it is like brazil...
well nevermind me, on secondthought i have nothing to say...

                ok. few points.

vray demo is expired so you must be using the free version

once you have it installed (you say your new with max) you then need to switch to vray renderer under the "current renderer" section.
its not as easy as installing and clicking render. Vray, fR, Brazil and mental ray all available for max are advanced renderers.
this is not to say its impossible to learn. with a great user community you can search the forum for render settings and advice on using it
