  • Shiny leather material ?

    hi renderers..!
as I'm trying to simulate an interior photograph I found on a magazine,
I came to the part of materials,
I tried many times to make a good shiny leather material to look like the one in the photo,
    but I failed !
    see the picture here..

you see it's a shiny leather, that you almost think it gives tow different colors,
what do u suggest to make something like this ?
what is better to use in this case, Vray material ,or a standard one?
any tips about making good leather materials will be appreciated,
and if you have some common setting for leather material,
please share it if you can,
    and thanks in advance,
    Hussam

thats not really a complicated material to create. Its just has really glossy reflections. This model is probably not the best to illustrate the material though.

        percydaman !
that's what I wanted the material to look like ,
I'm kinda bigginer with such materials, and for you I think it's so simple to do..
will you please post the exact setting that u used to produce that material,?(picture will be better if possible)
        and thanks in advance,

thanks yage, that topic was so impressive, but wasn't for a "leather" material..it was for a fabric one,
        but also useful...

        waiting your reply percydaman ,
        take care,

Im afraid I didn't save the file. But its just a vraymat with fresnel reflection with IOR of 2.2 I think. The glossy is set to .6 I believe. The diffuse color was a very light salmon and the reflect color was a VERY light yellow.

            any help ?!
did I make something wrong ,I just applied your settings, but still this leather look kinda solid, not shiny...!
although I used tow lights ,direct and Vray,..
is it material? lights? render settings that affcet it?
would you please try to help me through this ?

can you post a screenshot of your material and your scene setup? I mean you dont even need vray to get this kind of material. You just need to make sure your lights are setup to get those higlights. Use the place highlight function in max to help you.

                an other method

in photoshop, do a blackmap 800x400
add a few rectangle and some
                here is mine
                http://www.geocities.com/thablanchh/...io-reflect.jpg

import it in the reflect slot (spherical environment), in the over rollout, the rgb level should be at 1.75

blur the image, blur 1.25, blur offset 0.55

now it is way too reflective, but set the value in between 10 and 20, and your reflection should be reaaaalyy nice, without the waiting of real reflections..

                hope it helps you

The only reason i asked what version was because you have control over Highlight's in the newer versions of vray, but not in yours.

ok this is a little test with standard glossy settings.

I think you must be carefull when trying to create a leather material ... to much glossy and it will look like plastic not enough it will look like cloth... so with a good Leather texture and good even glossy settings you should be able to create a nice affect.

                            Thank you so much Natty
                            I really appreciate your help,
but can that be done using Vray 1.09.03n ?!
it's getting weird, cos I've seen great works that have used Vray 1.09.03n with such materials ,is there a way at least to "fake" it somehow ?
must I get 1.45 to make good leather glossiness ?
what do u advice me ?

percydaman, did u use Vray 1.45 to render your image? that's how i want it to look actually,

thanks again guys, and sorry if I was asking too much
