Is this possible? Do cameras in Vray have to be designated as spherical for this to work?

No, there isn't a file size or a resolution limit. You can check this thread here for a limitation when using the denoiser though:https://forums.chaos.com/forum/chaos...herical-camera
How are you setting the resolution for the panorama? You can just set the Height resolution and the Width is calculated automatically based on the FOV X and FOV Y values.

When you switch to Spherical the resolution resets(which is somewhat unexpected, we will look into it) you have to set the Height gain to whatever value you like and the Width will update. If the Approx GPU memory turn red that means that you are close to the memory limit and may not have enough to render out that specified resolution. You can also try to disable the Denoiser option if the output has artifacts mentioned in the linked thread in my previous post.
