  • New to Vantage - competition scene won't load.

Hi everyone, As usual i'm a little late to the conversation but am now keen to have a go at Vantage for this utopia competition. The concept of a real time renderering engine is exciting and i've also been using Twinmotion until now with ArchiCAD which works quite well - obviously though anything Chaos comes out with will be more ground breaking. I have an idea in mind for the architectural centerpiece, but am unable to get the rest of the scene to load in Vantage.

I have downloaded the scenes which open fine in Max2020 for me, but when I go to try and open the vrscene file in vantage It runs into a graphics card memory error. Bypassing limitations doesnt work either.

I've recently upgraded my workstation to a 10th generation i9 but skimped a little on the graphics card - only a 2060RTX. My primary work is just inhouse 3D so a good CPU is the main criteria other than handling the Max viewports.

I was still hopeful that there would be a means of working around this memory limitation for the Vantage competition? (maybe there is a minimum RTX card required?). If it's impossible no problems - I gave it a go, but wanted to check here first.

Am I missing something here? Once everything is loaded properly in max, would I then need to make a new vrscene file from that point?

By the way - also really digging these new 3DSMax indie licences which keeps me in 3D

Think I've problem solved this myself. managed to load a "small" vray scene from max of a house i'm working on. Had to turn almost everything else off (cars, tree's people) just to load the scene and it even bombs out when i go to render a high resolution frame. If i halve the resolution output it works though.

Shouldn't a 6GB graphics card handle a bit more than this even when it's low spec?. Looks great and is pretty straightforward in principle - i've set up camera's and am generating an animation at the moment, so all of that side of things works.

Anyway great concept, just not practical for me or usable for the utopia competition unless I get an OP GPU.

I think the contest scene requires an 8 GB card minimum (barely fits), although I don't see this on the contest homepage. We would have loved to see more submissions. Sorry about that.

We are aware of the memory requirements and we're thinking about possible solutions, specifically for the "offline" render mode. Render resolution is currently a big factor. Unless you're using Live Link from 3dsMax it's best to stop any other 3D apps to free up as much GPU memory as possible.

One more thing. Apart from keeping a low resolution, disabling the Light Cache from File->Advanced Scene Settings should also reduce memory use. But again, I think the Utopia scene has no chance on a 6GB card
